Lichtsources

Introduction

Everywhere in the modern world, in virtually every building and along many roads, one find lightsources. Without these lightsources the world would look completely different: mankind would be dependent on the rithm of day and night for work and leisure.

[ Lampje ] According to recent estimated, 10 billion lamps are in use throughout the world. About 80 percent of these are incandencent lamps and 15 percents fluorescent lamps. All these lamps together use an amount of energy that is equivalent to the output of 80 power plants. These numbers indicate that the usage of lamps has an enormous economical, social and environmental impact. The research focussed on lighting takes place without being noticed by most people. Nevertheless, a large effort is focussed at improving the quality of light, efficiency and applicability of lamps.

To learn more about (the development of) lamps, you can refer to the web-sites of the major lamp manufacturers: Philips, Osram, GE. Furthermore, we would like to direct your attention to the personal website of Maxime Gendre, who does his PhD at Eindhoven University of Technology. In his spare time he collects lamps and has put a large amount of information on his website.
